Lost Journal, entry 4

Day 44
I'm still hidden in the hatch. Jack is facing off with a man who was in the hatch (Desmond) who is holding Locke at gunpoint. Desmond says if Jack moves he'll blow Locke's head off. Jack is trying to get Desmond to put the gun down. He seems to recognize him from somewhere. It's pretty tense all around. I hear something behind Locke and Desmond....It's Kate. Where did she come from? She has a rifle which she fires at the wall. At the sound, Desmond let go of Locke and he grabbed the gun. The standoff appears to be over for now. That's a relief. Desmond seems upset about something though. I see it now....when Kate fired the gun she hit the computer.
We're all going to die? What the heck is he talking about? Is the hatch rigged with explosives that will be armed if the computer is destroyed?
Jack is asking what is going on. Desmond is pointing to a digital clock on one wall that is counting down. He says if the code isn't entered and the button
Isn't pushed by the end of the countdown, something bad will happen. He doesn't specify what. He's trying to fix the computer now..what kind is that anyway? I've never seen one like it. Looks a bit like the old Apple II computers. Desmond just asked Locke if he could fix computers. He said no. Kate then said that Sayid could. Locke told Kate to go and get him. Jack is asking her if she'll be able to climb up the cable..Desmond says there's a back entrance so she won't have to. She's going now.
Jack is questioning Desmond on how he got here.
Interesting story...Desmond says he was on a race around the world three years ago. His boat crashed on this island and he was found by the hatch's former occupant. The two of them were in the hatch until the other man,Calvin died. Desmond has been here alone ever since. He's giving them a filmstrip. Says watch it to learn more. Projector is in the pantry. I wonder what's on it? Locke is getting the projector. They're getting ready to watch the film now.
This place is a remote station for The Dharma Initiative.(whatever that is) It was originally a research laboratory. The electromagnetic anomalies around the island were being studied. There was some kind of problem and certain procedures were put into effect. There were supposed to be teams of two using the hatch. Every 108 minutes one of them has to enter a code in the computer and push the execute button.
No explanation for why that was necessary was given. Locke wants to watch the film again. Jack is questioning Desmond again. He believes nothing will happen if the button isn't pushed..that it's some kind of behavioral experiment. Desmond believes in the threat, for sure. I think Locke does too. Uh-oh. Desmond did something he shouldn't have while tinkering with the computer and the power just went out. He's kind of freaking out now. Locke is telling him not to worry, that Sayid will be here soon. Desmond isn't buying it. He's packing a backpack (he has a stuffed bunny,who would have thought it?) He's heading for the door. Says he's going as far as he can run away. Jack is following him. Locke is all alone now. (except for me, that is)
He doesn't seem to know what to do, or like being alone. (can't blame him)
Kate, Sayid, and Hurley are here now. Locke asked for their help.
Kate and Hurley are looking for the circuit breaker and its conduit line. Sayid is working on the computer. They must have found the breaker box...the power is back on. Hurley said he found something else. ( judging from the part of the hatch he's in, it might be the pantry.) Locke is Asking Sayid if he can fix the computer. The countdown is 3:58. Sayid has the computer working. Locke is telling him the code. Hurley seems freaked out by what the code is.
Jack is back now. He says Locke made a mistake in the code. Locke wants Jack to push the button. He still swears nothing will happen. An alarm is going off. Locke is telling Jack to take a leap of faith and do it. I hope they stop arguing and do something. There isn't any more time. That's a relief. He did it. The counter is back to 108. I was getting worried there. Locke says he'll take the first shift.
I wonder what would have happened if the code hadn't been entered and the button pushed? I also wonder if anyone is still monitoring this "station"?
What a day this has been. What else could happen? I'm getting a little sleepy. I'll just close my eyes for a bit.
